Technical Considerations
The Heartbreak Choir is a flexible, tour-ready production designed for a wide range of venues, with minimal technical complexity.
The key requirement is the integration of a local community choir, engaged in advance and rehearsed both remotely and on-site. Presenters can assist with introductions to local choirs where possible.
The work requires a basic lighting and sound system suitable for live performance, including playback and reinforcement for ensemble singing. The set is designed to be adaptable and tourable, with a modest footprint and efficient bump-in/out.
There is no nudity or explicit content; the show is suitable for broad audiences (recommended 15+), though it explores themes of grief, belonging, and community.
A Musical Director and small touring team support local participants to ensure a smooth, high-quality performance outcome.

Engagement
Beyond the performance, The Heartbreak Choir offers a suite of engagement activities designed to embed the work meaningfully within each community.
Central to this is the integration of a local choir, engaged up to six months in advance. Choirs rehearse a simple, accessible song within their regular sessions, supported by our Musical Director via online check-ins, followed by in-person rehearsals during the performance week. This ensures participants feel confident, included, and genuinely part of the production.
We also offer facilitated workshops exploring singing, storytelling, and community connection, as well as post-show Q&As that invite audiences to reflect on themes of belonging, migration, and collective experience.
These activities deepen audience connection by transforming participation from passive viewing into shared ownership. Choir members bring their networks, expanding reach and strengthening local relevance.
The cultural legacy is both tangible and lasting: strengthened relationships between venues and community groups, increased confidence and visibility for local participants, and a model for ongoing collaboration between professional and amateur artists. Communities are left not only with the memory of the event, but with deeper connections, new skills, and a renewed sense of collective voice.

Reviews
"It was very enjoyable and well-acted by a strong ensemble of engaging, energetic artists. Nice to see brisbane legends on a small stage in an intimate setting. Loved the innovative and interactive use of space. Standard of performance close to La Mama Melbourne. I liked how we are close to the production."
