Pathfinders
Independent Producer Intensive

Ten early-career performing arts producers will be selected from across Queensland to join the QTouring team in Brisbane for a week-long, immersive professional development experience.
#

Applications Open until 11:59pm, Wednesday 26 November 2025

The Pathfinders program is dedicated to developing independent producers and their practice. Across five days, participants will engage in masterclasses led by the team and external facilitators, partake in networking opportunities with key industry players, attend artistic events, and meet with Queensland’s major artistic organisations, presenters, and established independent artists.

With a focus on touring work in Queensland, the intensive will establish the foundations required for a long-term career as a freelance producer, including entrepreneurship, budgeting, pitching, fundraising, and logistics. Each participant will leave with the necessary skills and networks to coordinate artistic projects and tour work effectively.

Following the intensive, QTouring will continue to closely support these emerging producers — referring work to them, mentoring them, as we aim to foster a statewide network of confident, connected freelance producers.

FAQs

What is an "independent" producer?

In simple terms, an independent producer is a producer who works in a freelancing capacity, either for themselves (initiating projects) or for others (being brought on later to support projects). Their practice is dedicated to working with independent artists, collectives and companies — often multiple at a time — to drive creative projects forwards.

This differs to a salaried producer who is employed directly by an organisation — usually one at a time — on a longer-term contract.

Some independents are sole traders, some start companies, some go from project-to-project, and some take on a talent-management-type role for artists. Many also maintain a longer-term contract with an organisation and independently produce on the side.

They are usually unsalaried, and work off a combination of wages, fees, commissions and royalties.

Some examples of independent producing companies include:

Theatre Network Australia maintains a database of independent producers which can be found here.
