Overview

The Pilbeam Theatre, located on Victoria Parade in Rockhampton, is a cornerstone of Central Queensland’s cultural landscape. Opened in 1979 and named after the mayor at the time of opening, Rex Pilbeam. The theatre was designed by local architect Neil McKendry to replace the outdated Municipal Theatre. With a seating capacity of 979, it offers a professional-grade auditorium equipped with advanced lighting, sound, and staging technology.
Owned and operated by the Rockhampton Regional Council, the Pilbeam Theatre has hosted a diverse array of performances and events over its four-decade history, continuing to this day.

Objectives

Rockhampton Regional Council is committed to programming diverse arts and cultural activity, including the See it Live Program, presented and produced content, cultural events, and activity occurring at multiple locations within the Rockhampton region.

Council aims to program a broad range of content including musical theatre, contemporary music, classical music, theatre for young people, theatre drama, theatre comedy, standup comedy, classical dance, contemporary dance, cabaret, opera, circus/physical theatre and community events.

Council strives to provide content that is inclusive and considerate of, but not limited to First Nations, people with disabilities, seniors, young persons, LGBTIQA+, multi-cultural backgrounds and early childhood.

Audience Insights

Current audience base includes: Families and children, School and youth groups, Seniors and retirees, General public and music lovers.

Audience Development Strategies:
Partnering with schools and education providers for matinee and curriculum-linked performances.
Offering themed series (e.g., Morning Melodies) with added value like social gatherings.
Programming a mix of local talent and touring acts to maintain community engagement while attracting broader interest.
