ZEN ZEN ZO is a Brisbane-based physical theatre company at the forefront of contemporary performance and training in Australia. Founded by Lynne Bradley & Simon Woods in 1992, the company has continually produced innovative theatre experiences that have challenged and delighted the audiences. Zen Zen Zo has created over 50 new productions ranging from radical reinterpretations of the classics to innovative self-devised works, many of which have been showcased at national and international festivals.

Zen Zen Zo’s aesthetic was forged between the Asian dance-theatre traditions, the European avant-garde theatre movement, and contemporary pop culture. This fusion of old and new gives Zen Zen Zo its unique appeal, and an audience base that spans several generations. Zen Zen Zo believes in a theatre of contact, in which the relationship between the actors and the audience is at once intimate and shocking, compelling and confrontational, ritualistic and profane.

Blushing is a visceral physical theatre work exploring intimacy, touch, and human connection in a post-pandemic world. Created through Zen Zen Zo’s rigorous movement methodologies, the work transforms subtle human interactions into striking physical imagery. Absurd, experimental, and at times “delightfully strange,” Blushing invites audiences into a playful yet vulnerable landscape of bodies, impulses, and connection. Its ensemble-driven creation and bold physical language create an intimate, sensory experience that resonates with anyone navigating closeness, boundaries, shame, and tenderness in contemporary life.

Alongside performances of Blushing, the team will offer a range of engagement activities that invite audiences and local artists into the process behind the work. These include movement workshops for students, emerging performers, and community groups, introducing some of the physical theatre trainng methodologies taught by Zen Zen Zo (The Suzuki Method of Actor Training, The Viewpoints Method and Composition, and Butoh). The workshops focus on embodiment, ensemble awareness, and playful experimentation, giving participants practical tools while opening up conversations about touch, connection, and vulnerability.

Post-show Q&As will also create space for audiences to ask questions and hear directly from the artists about the devising process, the themes of the work, and its intentionally strange and experimental theatrical language.

These activities aim to build genuine exchange with local communities, particularly young and emerging artists who may not have regular access to experimental theatre experiences and physical theatre training. The legacy of the tour is the skills, ideas, and creative curiosity that participants carry forward, supporting new connections, future collaborations, and a stronger appetite for bold, movement-driven performance.
