In space, no one can hear you change the channel

Following an unplanned crash landing into an earthling’s apartment, a stranded and incompetent interstellar traveller must carefully plan their first steps into the outside world. Their only points of reference are a radio and a collection of sci-fi movies.

Through incredible circus, playful puppetry, and comedic physical theatre, Survival on a Strange Planet explores how the stories we tell shape our views of the world around us. See the human-made world through new eyes as a naive alien discovers what we think about ourselves and each other through our pop culture in a fun-filled adventure brought to life on stage by one circus artist and one puppeteer.

Survival on a Strange Planet uses audio snippets from movies, television, song, radio and podcasts to explore gender representation in media through a narrative that is ultimately joyful and engaging for general audiences.

About the company

Glitter Martini

The aim of Glitter Martini is to create productions that are innovative, engaging, and welcoming.

Each show is built to include the audience in the fun, as that real inclusivity is what separates and elevates live performance from other forms of entertainment. Our work is our opportunity to create a unique world that the audience can check in to when they arrive, leaving the real one behind, even for just an hour or so. Glitter Martini shows are proudly for the general public - they are inviting, emotionally accessible, and joyful.

Glitter Martini has present works in festivals around Australia, and well as in more unconventional locations including breweries, warehouses, an old church and even a residential home.

Survival On A Strange Planet received support from BackBone, City of Gold Coast, and Aerial Athletic studios. Survival On A Strange Planet received initial development through the DPS Academy with Dead Puppet Society and The Princess Theatre.

Technical Considerations

The work contains aerial circus. The venue must be capable of rigging aerial apparatus with a minimum of 5m of useable height. The venue must supply an advanced rigger with experience rigging circus. In regional locations where no such person is available, we can discuss arrangements for bringing someone in from close by, or adding another person to the touring party. In this instance, the rigger could also act as the stage hand.

Marketing & Engagement

Unique Selling Point

Survival on a Strange Planet is a unique combination of circus, puppetry, comedic physical theatre, and visual theatre. It is a funny, joyful, narrative driven work made to engage and entertainment general public audiences, while exploring representation of women in media and pop culture stereotypes. It is also suitable for drama students in grades 9 - 12 studying units on Circus, Puppetry, Physical Theatre, Visual Theatre, Magical Realism, and Political Theatre. It is a non-verbal show that is broadly suitable for ESL speakers, and the d/Deaf community. Notes on prerecorded audio played can be provided to assist in interpretation.

Marketing Materials

High quality marketing materials, including copy, a promotional sizzle reel in various sizes for digital marketing, and production photos are available.

Engagement

Beginner puppetry, physical theatre, or circus workshops are available at an additional cost. These workshops can be tailored to school students or the general public and can take place at the venue or in local schools.
